A taste of Australian skills on the international stage

During April this year, the Australian tourism, food and beverage and vocational education and training (VET) sectors were the highlight of Vietnam with the third annual 2018 Taste of Australia summit being hosted by Australia Unlimited across Central Vietnam, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

While giving Australian food and beverage suppliers the opportunity to build brands and networks in the growing Vietnamese market, the summit also showcased Australian VET qualifications in tourism and hospitality, with three members of the Australian VET Alumni taking part in the festivities.

On hand to demonstrate Australia’s world leading VET provision was 2015 Australian Training Awards VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year, Stephen Lunn, 2015 Australian School-based Apprentice of the Year finalist Sammy Masih and WorldSkills Australia Skillaroo and medalist Emilia Montague.

A highlight for the Alumni was meeting the Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, the Hon. Mark Coulton MP and internationally renowned chef, Mr Luke Nguyen, who is the summit’s key ambassador.

The Alumni joined Mr Nguyen and Assistant Minister Coulton as official delegates for a number of activities to showcase the best of Australian food and beverages, education and training and culinary culture to Vietnamese business and consumers

The Alumni trio took part in a visit to the KOTO hospitality school in Hanoi to demonstrate their culinary, barista and beverage making skills to local Vietnamese students. KOTO – Know One, Train One – was founded in 1996 by Vietnamese-Australian Jimmy Pham as a means of providing budding young Vietnamese chefs, bartenders and baristas the chance to learn the hospitality essentials at an international standard. VET Alumnus, chef and trainer, Stephen Lunn was very impressed with the standard of training he witnessed at KOTO.

“The skill level was above what I expected. I think this program is working and it’s working with such great effect bringing these students a purpose, a goal and a dream.” Stephen said.
