A love of sourdough leads Morgan to her dream job in Belgium

Australian VET Alumni and Apprenticeship Ambassador Morgan Clementson tried a number of different career pathways before she realised she could make her passion for baking a career.

She worked in hospitality, information technology, retail, automotive repair and human resources by her mid-twenties and was still unsure about her future.

“I was working for Porsche driving fast cars at Eastern Creek in a normal Monday to Friday job. It was going to be a massive life and career change at 27 but I decided I wanted to be my own boss – so I looked at what I was happiest doing which was working in a bakery when I was younger,” Morgan said.

From Rockdale, in Sydney’s southern suburbs, Morgan completed a Certificate III in Retail Baking (Bread) and a Certificate III in Retail Baking (Cake and Pastry) through TAFE NSW – Illawarra Institute.

She then worked for Woolworths, Mick’s Bakehouse, Waminda Bakery and Jones The Grocer during her apprenticeship, allowing her to gain broad experience in different environments.

“Starting my apprenticeship gave me discipline, actually going to TAFE on time, also wearing uniform and getting homework again in my mid-twenties! It gave me an understanding that if I really wanted to succeed I had to focus.” Morgan says.

As part of her involvement in the 2013 Australian Training Awards, where she was the 2013 Australian Apprentice of the Year runner up, Morgan received the 2014 Australian Overseas Foundation scholarship which took her to Belgium to do a three month tour of European bakeries, during which she was able to secure work with top bakers and pastry makers in England, Belgium and France.

She went on to be employed as an International Démonstrateur/Technical Advisor for Puratos in Belgium – her dream job – advising on products and services available in over 100 countries around the world. Morgan now lives and breathes bakery life in a country that prides itself in its outstanding patisseries.

“I believe life is not about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself. By doing an apprenticeship, you are not only earning and learning, you are creating your future.”
